Miami FC vs. Rowdies

Miami FC 2 vs. Rowdies 1
Miami FC will advance to the third round of the U.S. Open Cup with a thrilling 2-1 victory in extra time over the Rowdies.
“It was the biggest game of the year for us so far,” Miami FC Head Coach Victor Pastora said. “It was a great effort by our guys. Now we get to play against an MLS team and we are looking forward to that challenge.”
In similar fashion to last week’s U.S. Open Cup match, the Blues took advantage of an early opportunity as Christian Gomez took a shot on goal on a free kick from just outside the box that bounced off Tampa Bay goalkeeper Josh Lambo’s chest and into traffic in front of the net. The careening ball ended up at the feet of Paulo Jr. who knocked the ball into the open net to give Miami a 1-0 lead in the 2nd minute.
Miami FC continued to control the game with sound defense and maintaining possession of the ball throughout the half, keeping the Rowdies from having many quality opportunities in the first half.
Miami nearly extended their lead after a free kick in the 10th minute by Euzebio Neto barely overshot traffic inside the box and went out of bounds to keep the score intact.
The Rowdies came close to tying the game in the 35th minute after a header by Yendry Diaz after a free kick was tipped just over the crossbar by Miami FC goalkeeper Caleb Patterson, making the leaping save to help give the Blues the lead going into the half.
Both clubs came out with a sense of urgency at the beginning of the half as Abe Thompson took a shot from inside the box that just missed the left post and went wide in the 47th minute. Tampa Bay went right back on the attack as Long Tan took a shot of his own that almost tied the game just a minute later.
The Rowdies came dangerously close to tying the game as former Blues forward Aaron King found himself with an open look from the edge of the box. Patterson denied the shot and deflected it away to preserve the Miami FC lead in the 68th minute.
The game became increasingly physical as the game wore on and Tampa Bay’s Diaz picked up the equalizer in the 82nd minute, punching in a dead ball in the box after a free kick was sent in by Gyorio to make it a 1-1 game.
Diaz almost picked up another goal with a shot right on goal in the 87th minute, but Patterson once again made a diving save to knock it away to help send the game to extra time after both teams remained tied at the end of regulation.
An opportunity arose in the 97th minute as Robert Valentino was called for a handball in the box to give the Blues a penalty kick. Abe Thompson then converted the PK a minute later, firing his shot towards the right side of the net near the post to regain the lead for Miami FC in the extra time period.
