The Genius we know as Rodney Marsh wishes all of you a very Happy Xmas & positive New Year!!!
And if you have read ‘I was born a Loose Cannon’ you will understand that Rod wouldn’t bother if he wasn’t sincere.
And that leads me to why I think this book is spellbinding. I mentioned before that Rod simply wouldn’t even know how to dilute his opinions, like 90% of watered down reader friendly autobiographies, that sometimes lets us peep at a few cracks but is mainly a gloss finished ‘product’. ‘Loose Cannon’ is more like a testament of a man, still jumping on moving trains!
The book co- written (NOT ghost written) with Brian Woolnough, is not drenched in rose coloured reflections of glory day’s with a sugary, palatable coating. This is ‘ THE MAN’, and if you think you will be offended by this book (because ONLY the truth can do that!!) then you probably will!
So, along you pop to the Harry Potter section.
But the real reason this book is so unique, is because it’s the story of a GENUINE Genius. And there is one thing a genius does not have, whether it be – Van Gogh, Syd Barrett, John Lennon or George Best... And that’s consistency & well laid out plans. Everything is off the cuff or a creative binge ... Then nothing. Tomorrow is a long time for a Genius who lives on instinct & reacts to how they feel THAT VERY SECOND- to hell with tomorrow, it may never come!
In football, Geoff Hurst & Bobby Charlton were great, solid, planned out and consistent players and very reliable... But the ‘Genius’ was George Best who overshadowed all!
WHY? Because a genius doesn’t give a damn about the future like a calculated person does. They set their sails & the wind does the rest, leave the direction to other forces ‘ I can’t think about tomorrow, I haven’t got through today yet!’
This gut instinct, blended with a desire to be true to oneself and say & do what they believe to be right, even if it offends the compromising type.. Is how they can look themselves in the mirror everyday. Rodney Marsh is a perfect example of that. That means his story takes unexpected twists & turns and when he pulls the sails in, sometimes is left saying ‘ How did I get here??’
A Genius also can have a knack of sometimes turning a surefire success into a complete disaster. Books like these then, are full of surprises. Geoff & Bobby’s books reflect their personality.... So does Rodney’s.... And the difference is huge.
Some people like Van Gogh HAD to paint, Spike Milligan HAD to write, Rodney Marsh HAD to play football!!
These day’s, a lot of players are along for the ride and ‘bling’ that comes with it, but you get the feeling both Rodney & George would of slept on a cardboard box to get a first team game... THEY HAD TO PLAY!!!!
And Rodney still does. He lives for ‘NOW’ not Wembley 1967 (Although all these places in Rod’s memory are thoroughly re-lived). But a Genius IS NOT predictable, so how can the book be??
Maybe, if not for his family, Rod not be with us anymore. There is a self destruct button in a Genius, that is often very hard not to press!
Van Gogh, George Best & others did press it, Rodney’s hand has hovered over it time again- ‘ A Loose Cannon’
Rodney is from a poor London background. We tend to speak our mind, rather than ‘ smile to the face- slag off behind the back’ method of the ‘normal’ world.... Well, some of us.
Those kind of ‘people’ are on an obvious collision course with people like us. Rodney does not go out of his way to insult, but if you are a ‘snake’ it’s obvious you are going to get caught in the net!
And I think, there lays the misunderstood element of Rodney Marsh!
Rod, does not enjoy insulting people, but I , like Rodney can’t figure out why people choose to be ‘ fake’ in the first place, there’s no need!
Are if you do find yourself caught in the net, it will be explained exactly why!
I for one, ALWAYS prefer to know exactly where I stand with people, but it’s getting rarer to do that, but Rodney does it & I can take it & respect it... Some take it as a direct insult. Nobody ever said the truth must come gift wrapped!
There are actually more genuine compliments given out by Rodney, but these don’t grab the attention.
This is no bitter man looking back at what ‘might’ have been, but what did, why, and forward we move.... Straight into another unplanned adventure!!!
